Lecture on Safeguarding the Past: The Role of the Department of Archaeology and the Antiquities Act in Preserving Bangladesh's Heritage” by Afroza Khan Mita, Regional Director, Dhaka and Mymensing Division, Department of Archaeology, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of Bangladesh.

This lecture will highlight the Department of Archaeology (DoA)’s role in preserving, protecting, and promoting Bangladesh's rich archaeological heritage. The Regional Director of the Dhaka Region will share DoA's contributions to archaeological research, site management, conservation practices, and public engagement in heritage preservation. Special attention will be given to the Antiquities Act of 1968, the principal legislation that governs the safeguarding of archaeological heritage in Bangladesh. The Speaker will share practical examples of archaeological site management, discuss challenges related to sustainable heritage preservation, and suggest possible solutions to overcome the challenges.

Biography of the Speaker

Afroza Khan Mita is an accomplished archaeologist and archaeological site management expert currently serving as the Regional Director of the Department of Archaeology's Dhaka and Mymensingh Division. She has extensive experience in the management and preservation of Bangladesh's archaeological heritages and in conducting various archaeological surveys, excavations, geoarchaeological, and public archaeological projects in Bangladesh. Mita holds both a Bachelor's (Honors) and Master’s degree in Archaeology from Jahangirnagar University. She joined the Department of Archaeology in 2010 as an Assistant Director, and from 2016 to 2022, she served as the Regional Director for the Khulna and Barisal Division. In her role, Mita has contributed significantly to the administration and management of archaeological sites and museums, project implementation, and collaboration with international organizations, including UNESCO. She has participated in various training, seminars, and conferences in countries such as South Korea, France, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia. Her research has been published in various national and international journals and books.
